If you live in Fairfield County or you’re thinking about moving here, let me tell you something: the food scene is one of the best-kept secrets in New England. And honestly, it’s not that secret anymore
I’ve pulled together 22 of my favorite spots across Greenwich, Westport, Darien, New Canaan, Stamford, Fairfield, and Rowayton, covering the full range from a casual weeknight dinner to a table you book two weeks out for something special.
Whether you’re a longtime local or new to the area (welcome, by the way), this is your starting point.
Greenwich
1. L’Escale at the Delamar Hotel
Best for: Special occasions, waterfront dining 💰 $$$$ | 500 Steamboat Rd, Greenwich
L’Escale sits right on Greenwich Harbor inside the Delamar Hotel, and it earns every bit of its reputation. The menu blends French and American coastal cuisine, the views of the water are gorgeous, and the service is the kind that makes you feel like the evening was well planned. If you have a birthday, anniversary, or any reason to make a night feel like an event, this is your spot. Locals once staged a near-revolt when there was talk of closing it, which tells you how deeply this place is embedded in the community.
2. Townhouse Greenwich
Best for: Date night, coastal American cuisine 💰 $$$$ | 231 East Putnam Ave, Greenwich
Townhouse is one of those places that manages to be both romantic and relaxed at the same time. Executive Chef Stephen Lewandowski builds a seasonal menu around local produce, fresh seafood, and grass-fed proteins, and the wine list clocks in at around 250 bottles. There is a children’s menu too, which makes it more flexible than it might look from the outside. Outdoor seating opens up in warmer months. This one consistently comes up when people ask me where to take a client or celebrate something worth celebrating.
3. The Cottage Greenwich
Best for: Creative American, food lover’s night out 💰 $$$ | 4 West Putnam Ave, Greenwich
The Cottage started in New York and landed in Greenwich in 2022, and it has become one of the most talked-about restaurants in Fairfield County. Chef Brian Lewis puts real care into sourcing from local farms and artisan growers, and the menu reflects that. Reviews consistently call it a top-three dining experience, and I believe it. This is the kind of place where you actually pay attention to your food. Make a reservation.
4. Elm Street Oyster House
Best for: Seafood, raw bar, casual but quality 💰 $$$ | 11 West Elm St, Greenwich
Elm Street Oyster House has been a Greenwich institution for over 20 years and for good reason. The raw bar rotates six varieties of oysters daily, the clam chowder is a local staple, and everything feels fresh because it is. The atmosphere is relaxed and accessible, which makes it a great pick for a weeknight dinner or a long Saturday lunch. If you’re new to Greenwich and want to understand why people love eating here, this is a great first stop.
Westport
5. The Cottage Westport
Best for: Farm-to-table, a thoughtful dinner 💰 $$$$ | 1 Post Rd E, Westport
Chef Brian Lewis also has a Westport location, and both are worth visiting on their own. Deeply rooted in seasonality, locally sourced ingredients, and cooking that feels intentional. The atmosphere is warm with shiplap, wood beams, and candlelight that gives it a cozy farmhouse feel without being over the top. The menu changes with what’s actually good that time of year. This is the kind of restaurant that slows you down in the best way.
6. Rizzuto’s Oyster Bar and Restaurant
Best for: Seafood, waterfront, lobster rolls 💰 $$$ | 4 Riverside Ave, Westport (Saugatuck neighborhood)
Rizzuto’s is right across from the Saugatuck River, and the setting alone makes it worth the trip. The menu covers fresh seafood, a raw bar, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, grass-fed steaks, and their lobster roll, which was voted Westport’s best. In winter they do private igloo dining, and in summer the terrace opens up. Year-round the stone fireplace inside keeps things comfortable. This is a community-centered restaurant that does multiple things well without losing focus on any of them.
7. Massi Co
Best for: Casual Italian, pizza nights, natural wine 💰 $$$ | 90 Post Rd E, Westport
Massi Co is housed in Westport’s original Town Hall building in the heart of downtown, and the space has great bones. The menu is Southern Italian-American: brick oven Neapolitan pizza, homemade pasta, craft cocktails, and natural wines. The food is clean and vibrant and not trying too hard. This is a great option when you want Italian that feels lively rather than formal, and the downtown location makes it easy to pair with a walk around Westport before or after.
8. Emmy Squared Pizza
Best for: Detroit-style pizza, casual, great bar 💰 $$ | 1776 Post Rd E, Westport
If you have not had Detroit-style pizza, this is where to start. Crispy cheese edges, airy dough, bold red sauce, and topping combinations that actually make sense. Emmy Squared started in Brooklyn and the craft has carried through to Westport. Happy Hour runs Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6pm. Great for a casual weeknight or a group outing where you do not want to overthink the plan.
Darien
9. Scena Wine Bar
Best for: Mediterranean, date night, brunch 💰 $$$ | 17 Center St, Darien
Scena has been a Darien staple since 2010 and it holds up. Mediterranean-inspired menu, a wood-fired brick oven, and a wine and cocktail list that is genuinely curated rather than just long. The cider steamed mussels, ricotta gnocchi, and fettuccini carbonara are menu regulars that people come back for. Outdoor seating makes weekend brunch here especially good in warmer months. Family-owned and consistently solid, this is the kind of neighborhood restaurant every town needs.
10. Green and Tonic
Best for: Healthy, fast casual, weekday lunch 💰 $$ | Multiple locations across Darien and Greenwich
Green and Tonic started in Darien back in 2012 and has since grown to nine locations across Fairfield and Westchester counties, which tells you how much people love it. The menu is built around organic bowls, smoothies, salads, and wellness-focused options that actually taste good. This is not the kind of healthy food that feels like eating around something. It is genuinely filling and satisfying. A go-to for a lunch that does not drag you down by 2pm.
New Canaan
11. L’Ostal
Best for: Special occasion, date night, creative menu 💰 $$$$ | 7 Forest St, New Canaan
L’Ostal was voted Best Creative Menu and Best Special Occasion/Date Night Restaurant in New Canaan and Darien by Moffly Media readers, and it earns that recognition. The menu is inspired and the dining experience is genuinely memorable. If you want something different in New Canaan, a spot where the food actually surprises you, this is it.
12. Tavern at GrayBarns
Best for: Private dining, intimate gatherings, a real occasion 💰 $$$$ | 199 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan
The Tavern at GrayBarns sits on one of the most beautiful properties in New Canaan, and the dining experience here is intimate and unhurried. Voted Best Hotel Restaurant and Best Private Dining/Intimate Venue by local readers, this one is worth bookmarking for events, celebrations, and any time you want a meal that feels like something more than just dinner.
Stamford
13. The Wheel at The Village
Best for: Locally sourced American, waterfront, farm-to-table 💰 $$$ | 191 Magee Ave, Stamford
The Wheel is one of Stamford’s most consistent standouts. Set in an industrial-chic waterfront space, the menu draws from over 40 local farmers, fishermen, and purveyors, and rotates based on what’s actually in season. There’s a hearth oven in the open kitchen used for roasting and Neapolitan-style pizzas. The cocktails are strong and the energy is great. This is a spot that feels genuinely connected to where the food comes from, and you can taste it.
14. Cafe Silvium
Best for: Authentic Italian, a proper dinner, neighborhood gem 💰 $$$ | 371 Shippan Ave, Stamford
Cafe Silvium has been open since 2001 and remains one of the most loved Italian restaurants in the county. Old-world Southern Italian cooking, fresh pasta, homemade sauces, and a warm family-run energy that you can feel when you walk in. Weekend reservations are not taken, so arrive when they open or plan for a wait because this place fills up fast and for good reason. If you love Italian and have not been here, it should be on your list.
15. Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings
Best for: Dumplings, casual, something different 💰 $$ | 90 Bank St, Stamford
Nan Xiang earned a Michelin Guide mention for their soup dumplings, and their Stamford opening generated serious buzz locally. If you have never had proper xiaolongbao, this is where to go. The dumplings are the main event but the broader menu holds up too. It is casual, fast, and genuinely good in a way that sticks with you. A great spot for lunch or a low-key dinner when you want something outside the usual rotation.
16. Barcelona Wine Bar
Best for: Tapas, wine, a lively night out 💰 $$$ | 222 Summer St, Stamford
Barcelona Wine Bar has locations across the country but the Stamford spot has a real following and holds its own. Tapas-focused menu with a Spanish-inspired wine list that is actually interesting and well-priced relative to what you are getting. Great for groups, great for a date, and great for a night where you want a couple of plates and a few glasses of something good rather than a full sit-down dinner. Brunch here is also a strong option on weekends.
17. Çka Ka Qëllu
Best for: Albanian cuisine, something completely different, a truly memorable dinner 💰 $$$ | 15 Clark St, Stamford
This one is worth talking about on its own. Çka Ka Qëllu is an Albanian and Kosovan restaurant tucked down a side street in downtown Stamford, and people consistently say it feels like being transported somewhere in old-world Europe. The space has exposed brick walls, wood beams, live music, and staff sometimes dressed in traditional clothing. The food is the kind you do not forget. Flavorful grilled meats, shareable meze, house-baked breads, slow-cooked stews in earthenware pots, and desserts like baklava and trileqe that finish the meal the right way. The owner started the restaurant because his son asked where he could take friends for authentic Albanian cuisine and could not find anywhere. The result is something genuinely special for Fairfield County. If you have never had Albanian food, this is a great first introduction. If you have, you already know. The lamb is to die for. My go to order are the mantias, burek, mixed grill, sausage dip, and of course the home made bread!
Fairfield
17. Esh Mediterrane
Best for: Middle Eastern, wood-fired, something you have not tried 💰 $$$ | 2505 Black Rock Tpke, Fairfield
Esh is the kind of restaurant that surprises people. The entrance is tucked and easy to miss, but inside it opens up into a cavernous and moody space with a roaring wood-burning oven at the center of the open kitchen. The flatbreads coming out of that oven are excellent, and the appetizer section is where the menu really shines. The Moroccan cigars, filled with warmly spiced beef inside crackling phyllo dough, are one of those dishes that people bring up unprompted when talking about Fairfield restaurants. One of the most recognized spots in Fairfield according to local dining guides, and for good reason.
18. Centro Ristorante and Bar
Best for: Italian, downtown Fairfield, a reliable dinner 💰 $$$ | 1435 Post Rd, Fairfield
Centro is a Fairfield staple located in the heart of downtown. Consistently praised for its Italian cooking, it strikes the right balance between accessible and quality. The kind of spot you can take a client, bring your parents, or meet a friend for dinner and know you will all leave happy. Regularly recognized as one of the top-rated restaurants in Fairfield, and one that locals come back to again and again rather than just once.
19. Little Goose
Best for: Brunch, casual lunch, local staple 💰 $$ | 400 Post Rd, Fairfield
Little Goose has become one of those places Fairfield residents genuinely love and feel a little territorial about. A neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot known for fresh food, good energy, and staff that makes you feel like a regular pretty quickly. It comes up in almost every conversation about Fairfield dining, and for good reason. Get there early on weekends.
20. Ryebird
Best for: Casual, New American, after-work drinks and food 💰 $$ | 1499 Post Rd, Fairfield
Ryebird is a downtown Fairfield spot right near the train station that leans into New American comfort food with a solid bar program. The vibe shifts throughout the day from a casual lunch spot to a livelier evening scene. Good wings, thoughtful cocktails, and a menu that does not take itself too seriously. A three-minute walk from the Fairfield train station makes it an easy choice before or after a commute. A newer addition to Fairfield’s downtown that has quickly found its crowd.
Rowayton
21. The Restaurant at Rowayton Seafood
Best for: Waterfront seafood, outdoor dining, a proper occasion 💰 $$$ | 89 Rowayton Ave, Rowayton
Rowayton Seafood is one of those restaurants that earns its reputation year after year. Sitting right on the water in one of the most charming villages in Fairfield County, the setting alone is worth the drive. The menu covers traditional seafood, oysters, chowder, lobster, and seasonal dishes that rotate with what is fresh. The wine list earned a Wine Spectator Two Glass Best of Award of Excellence for 2025. You can arrive by car with free valet parking or, if you have a boat, dock right there. They bring Pearl, their oyster boat, back in spring each year, which is a nice bonus. Voted Best Seafood multiple times by Darien, New Canaan, and Rowayton Magazine’s Best of the Gold Coast Awards and recognized by Yankee Magazine’s Best of New England. Make a reservation, especially Thursday through Saturday.
22. Sails American Grill
Best for: Casual dinner, live music, weekend energy 💰 $$$ | 148 Rowayton Ave, Rowayton
Sails is the more casual, lively counterpart to Rowayton Seafood, and it has its own loyal following. The menu covers fresh, quality American fare with specialty sushi rolls, a solid raw bar, flatbreads, pasta, and steak options. Live music on weekends makes it a genuinely fun night out, and the bar scene picks up in the evenings. Daily specials rotate and are worth checking before you go. A great option when you want Rowayton’s waterfront village energy without the full white-tablecloth commitment.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
This is a starting list, not a complete picture. Fairfield County has more great restaurants than any one post can cover, and the scene is moving fast. New spots are opening across every town and menus change with the seasons.
Every restaurant here has a real following and a track record that justifies the inclusion. That said, the best recommendation is always going to come from a neighbor who just ate there last week.
If you have a local favorite I missed, drop it in the comments or send me a message. I am always adding to the list.
